2012-08-02:
After a pretty brutal two weeks, my grandmother passed away early this morning. Obviously this day has been coming for the last two years, since she entered the nursing home. She degraded fast in the end, but she held on to life. We knew it was only a matter of time less then a month ago, but that doesn't mean it's any less painful now. To watch someone just slip away like that, a tiny piece at a time, is hard. But it's over. 35 years of "going to see grandma" every friday… no more. No more confusion. No more pain. The world she saw and experienced is gone, never to return.
I have only one grandparent left.
Wow.
Work was going somewhat okay until today. First one monday was just "stuttering videos" so I reset his cable modem/router and cleaned his machine out a little. Problem stopped.
Went to the hotel, to "add more memory" to two machines, but they already had a gig, running XP. Well, their problem is the totally slow network they are using for those machines, some kind of greater security thing, I guess? Not the machine. The network is fine, I copied a 16mb file in about two seconds, it was just, *drag* *done* so it's not the switch they're connected to.
I took a look at some other machines and when I was done the person who signs the invoice asked if I had any machines I could sell them. Do I ever!
So I started out the next day with two $40 machines in my car. My 10:00 one was just dead. The little power light LED inside lit up, but there was no power-on action.
I said, "how about one of these equivalent machines?" and he said "okay." So I sold him one of those and moved his stuff over, then went back home for another one. Score.
In the afternoon I went and set the two machines up. One just in an office so a guy didn't have to bring his laptop in. (Really? Things are that bad for this hotel?) And the other replacing a windows 98 machine. No lie, there was still one out there! So two towers, two monitors, a set of speakers no longer clutter my house!
I made a pretty penny, I just hope it doesn't take them three months to get me the money!
Wednesday a really bad machine, infected all over the place. Took me two hours to get that one straight. Sheesh.
Called the ice cream place, tried to get a quicken file from his backup, but the machine wouldn't say on long enough. Sigh. When you get here, motherboards?
Today- nothing. I had several calls, and I even called them back. They were all "Oh, it's working now" or "Oh, I do this?" and that was that. One person canceled for Saturday. (AARG) One person wanted tomorrow. One person I still didn't reach.
So what did I do instead? Rewrite the parts of the Demongate High Book 2 that were spoilers, of course. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but it did need some creative thinking. I finished it, so my writing is now in Sean's hands again. It's been two months since school ended. He read… six chapters. I don't think he started the Paragon Novel yet. Sigh.
I totally read and edited and rewrote parts of book 2 in… a couple of days? With a concentrated effort today, in between talking to people on the phone? Ooookay.
He recently handed me a transformers comic to take home and read (as he often does). In between doing other things while there, I read it and handed it back to him. He was like, "It took me hours to read that." Guess I'm just a fast reader, or something?
Tomorrow? Two, setting up a new machine and setting up a laptop hand-me-down. Then I'll go see mom. Oh, have to drop off some website information I found out to the lawyer guy I work for, and go pick up a laptop at the Rebath place.
Game should also happen, finishing up last week's adventure.
One for Saturday, setting up some new Macs and Hard drives, so that should be okay. Sean's I believe, for the Pyre game.
Then a dinner in Grandma's honor at 5:00 sunday. Wow, I haven't been out to eat with my family in years.
I'll have to remember to put on pants.
