2010-06-16:

of the furious pursuit of prey that awoke me at five in the morning and the subsequent chase, thereof, by me, throughout the day.

The trouble with my house is the many things that line the walls, giving just enough clearance for something of the small, rodent like persuasion to hide, nearly effortlessly, behind. This would not trouble me so, should chipmunks stop coming into my blasted house to be killed already! So he disappeared and I tried to get back to sleep. He later appeared in the afternoon only to be chased into the collection room, where he promptly disappeared again. Super! Now he's in a room that's much smaller and has even BETTER hiding places, massive shelves with openings in back but not in front. I again give up the chase.

I have just spent the last hour tearing that room apart trying to save this insignificant creature's life. In the process I have totally messed the room up, broken a unicorn plate, and nearly broken my favorite, and possibly most valuable transformer, Jetfire. I was trying to herd him out the door of the house to the breezeway, whereupon I would close the screen door (with cats inside) and shoo him out the breezeway door. But again, he disappeared. I have moved, very gingerly, the massive style bookcases, he is not under there. Tamara, keeping watch from behind some screens blocking the doorway off (there's Macs in the way of the door closing, don't ask) reacted, so I think maybe he went out there, and possibly under the door to the garage? I let both hunters back in to help me look, but no result, so I left the garage door open a crack and will hope for the best.

stay out of my freaking house, already!

That being said, my morning job, that I was so looking forward to, was all about byting the dust (little pun there) as I managed to get 90% of her documents folder before it died and wouldn't be recognized anymore. The "it" being the hard drive that I sat and waited 45 minutes for it to get past a chkdsk of 75% and it finally did, then I ran chkdsk again and it got to 25% and went to "may have one or more unrecoverable problems". She had a backup drive too. Was I informed? In February when it was purchased so I could set it up properly? NO. So the last backup that was done, MANUALLY, was... you guessed it, February. Of course, the important data was not held in the documents folder like any normal program, no, it was buried deep inside the program folder so it was not backed up at all.

And the lesson here, kids, is to hire someone who "knows what they doing" before disaster strikes, because a little money now will save you a lot of time and aggravation later.  In the words of the great "die-betus" commercials: back up your data. Do it often. Every hour if you can manage it. Hey look, Macs have an automatic backup, every hour, to something called "time machine"? They're so great! My personal last backup was 11:14 PM. 25 minutes ago, and I know should my machine die, right now, I'm totally backed up. And that my readers in the very definition of the phrase "peace of mind."

So he went and got a new machine, but had to go back and get a new wireless adapter, as the linksys one didn't support 64bit Windows 7. Thanks, cisco! Of course, the dummy asked "does it still work?" to which I replied, "oh sure, it's just a driver issue. It would work fine on an XP machine." He takes it to staples so he gets the right thing, AND THEN CHUCKS IT. I ask, "where did it go?" He replies "Oh, I threw it away." "aaaarrrgggggg." I said to the sky. "I told you it was fine! It would have served a perfect backup for yours, you know, the one that's the EXACT SAME MODEL?"  Listen to me when I talk, people! These are not meaningless grunts and growls coming from my mouth. They are the literal truth of... oh yeah, my favorite Witnesses visited me. They're prepared, I have to give them that. They were all "but is God's day the same as ours?" when I busted out "if you touch the fruit in the center of the garden, that shall be the day you die." Realized I wasn't going to win that one, let me tell you. PROTIP: as soon as you start interpreting the words in the bible, you've changed their meaning, and thus, it isn't the bible anymore. If God had meant "You'll die sometime in the future that may or may not be a zillion years, ahahhaha" he would have said that. But no, he said "that will be THE DAY you die." Quite specific, no?

Keeping in mind this is a law office? But the money "won't be in the account until I can go to the bank tomorrow." Uh, what? Is this a law office or not? And the piddly little check you just wrote me, which would be like half an hour at your rates should I hire YOU, (I was there from 9:30-1:45) isn't cashable? (a felony). Great.

So again I ate lunch at 2:00. Hurray!

Rained. Stopped raining. Sun came out! Blue sky! Humid! Rolled down windows! Next time I looked it was pouring again. Make up your mind!

Put in some Perfect Horizon characters. This made me tweak the creator, cyber stuff wasn't working quite right. Put my living room back from my 5:00 am jaunt.

No calls? Sigh. So no work tomorrow I guess. I can put my project room back in order! Wait, a call at 9:11? Some network thing, probably talk him through it over the phone.
