2010-04-14:

I bet you can, with what you've read about me. If you started from the beginning, anyway. It's a question that's plagued me now for seven years. What is this horrible question I was asked today?

"do you remember me now?"

I hate it for several reasons. First because I hate lying to people. Never been good at it. Compulsive honesty, that's me. I can feel the dice rolling in my head to make the resolve check when I have to lie to people. And I must answer this question with a lie, every single time, because, no, I don't remember you. Especially the guy that asked it today- he was in this apartment complex I had pulled into this very week, and I know he didn't live there before because I just went there for the first time then. So right off the bat I'm at a disadvantage because now I'll get my location based info all mixed about in my head. So two of the cutest little kids answer the door (brother and sister) and here's this big guy. Who is this big guy? Have I seen these kids before? How many huge guys with kids do I know? Then he busts out that question. I think he might be the guy who lived over by the gas station on Hard, but I never saw those kids with him.

And it's not like I can just fire back with the old "Sir, I have no idea who you are, never seen you before in my life." ploy because of stupid dad. See, dad meets someone like that on the street and he could probably tell you what they do, how long they've lived in their house, their favorite food, and the plumbing work he did for them two times ago in their old place. Oh, and the fact that I obviously have met this person at some time because they are acting like I should know them. But as my father can keep a billion people straight in his head then obviously there is some deficiency about me that I can not. And it's insulting to people to imply that you don't remember them. I mean, right? And that is why I hate that question.

Now the second thing about today was a phone message I received. Hypothetical:

Please choose the statement below that inspires you to work harder for someone:

a) "We need you ASAP, not two days from now, TODAY."

b) "I'm not sure if you ever check your messages during the day but if you do and you get a chance, can you please give us a call. One of our employees is having email trouble and he'd like it looked at soon. I know today is probably too soon but maybe you can fit us in tomorrow?"

Thing is, I'm perfectly happy to come on short notice if I'm around. And I've worked for this company many times, it's not like I don't get right back to them. But you take attitude a) with me, and then I later learn that it wasn't really all that critical anyway because he could use webmail, do you think I'm going to be inclined to go out of my way next time you call? And don't give me that "customer is always right" crap, they're people. And people are jerks. PROTIP: People may not remember what you did, but they'll always remember how you made them feel

Lastly I received this notice of "45,000 mile maintenance" with a handy coupon of only "$249.95 with coupon" What? I've had the car exactly a month, haven't even made the first payment yet, and they're trying to sucker me in with "intermediate maintenance?" I paid an extra ~$2000 for a 4 year warranty, this kind of crap should be FREE. You want me to lose a day of work while you mess about AND give you a whole month's car payment, before I've even made my first payment on the vehicle? I. Don't. Think. So. Thank. You. With business being so slow I'm lucky I CAN make the first payment, and there's a vet bill (a big one) in my near future for Tamara who will probably go on Thyroid medicine (and testing) that I'm "looking forward to" so..... yeah. I'm assuming it's a 15,000 mile thing, which according to the Subaru web site is not all that impressive anyway for the money, considering most of that would have been done anyway as part of the NYS inspection.

But enough about that, this entry could go on forever! Yeah, work was done, it sucked. Monitor set up. One machine totally dead. Cables delivered. Two laptops finished, one from PER8 guy and another with Unmountable Boot Volume that took five minutes.

Did also get the second screen done on the character creator without too many roadblocks. Oddly I learned it won't tab between text boxes, which is weird, and that it takes clicking in the text boxes three times to get a "double click" behavior, but I guess I can live with that. It'll generate the background card automatically, and calculates how many stat points you have left correctly, so that's a good step forward.

Neil has furniture and interwebs again, so we're on for Saturday over at Sean's and perhaps we can start playing xbox again. Goodbye productivity! Woohoo! I mean, wait.

Not too much going on tomorrow yet, I'm sure something will come up.

No batman tonight, I guess. Too much time typing. Oh well. I just have the Joker fight and like 4 more riddles to solve, so I'm nearly there.

And what else is nearly there? Tomorrow!

Peace out!
