2021-12-02:
Fri:
Did the paperwork, always get unplesent things out of the way first. Wasn't
many to put in, less than ten. Looks like this year will be down from last
year, so that's a trend that keeps going. Let's push it down even further in
2022!
Package is still "processing" not "out for delivery." Odd.
Put up the tree and the other decorations. Oliver, who likes sitting under
it, immediately started having asthma attacks. Nice. I have to come up with
something to keep him out of there I guess. He hasn't had one all month,
then 3 in the first two days the tree was up? Seems like cause and effect to
me.
Did the shopping. Saw a red bolt in front of pet smart. It's the first one
I've seen "in the wild" and they pulled out right behind me so maybe mine
was the first one they had seen?
Got home, went to get the mail, some random car was out front and I looked
over. There was a UPS man. Why... was he just driving a random car? Anyway,
took delivery of the mac mini.
So going to shut this machine down and do the move. If you never hear from
me again, well, it was never completed. Pity me.
So I'm back, it must have worked, rigth? Mostly. My mail didn't come over AT
ALL. Not even the account information. Had to set them up again and try to
do an export from the old machine, then import them into the new machine. I
got my local folders back, sorta. Nothing but the main folder, because of
how weird mail works. I tried exporting the folders but didn't get the
sub-folders. And I have sub-folders for some people going back to 2001. The
most weird thing is I can see the data, it's been copied. Just not picked
up. Huh?
The TV doesn't work, naturally. The adapter works, it makes the monitor go
on. But not the TV. In fact it keeps flashing, it's kinda odd. Otherwise, my
geektool stuff didn't come over either. Annoying.
Updated a bunch of programs. (I can use blender again!)
My optical audio out works okay.
Okay, the mail thing wasn't so bad. I figured out how to move them, not that
it should have been needed, but still. I only have 3 folders with
sub-folders, and I could put them into a separate export folder and then
import them and move them into position all at once. Easier than the stupid
way thunderbird makes me do it when moving from live mail. I'll tell you
that much.
It actually seems like the only thing I have to figure out is the TV thing.
Huh. Whoops, according to exhibitedge.com "The answer is yes and no. For the
record the Display Port signal is not compatible with HDMI." Bummer. I might
have to do the same thing I do with the PC, take the HDMI out of the back of
the mini, and turn it into two signals. Mirror it, in other words. We can do
tomorrow's movie on the PC, it's not a big deal.
Ha! Solved it! The display issue. I ran the HDMI out from the back of the
Mac Mini and the PC into the selector box. I ran the output of the selector
box into the mirror box. Now I just hit a button to choose between Mac and
PC and both can be seen on the TV and on the display. Nice. I even figured
out audio is being carried by the HDMI so I don't need the headphone jack
plugged in at all. Saves me a cord.
Played some warframe.
Figured out the front audio jack on the docking station, got that squared
away, I was selecting the wrong audio port. Selecting the docking station
activates both ports, so that's nice.
Sat:
Did some cleaning, major cleaning of the bathroom. Needed to be done.
Messed with the desk. Cleaned it off. Hung the switch on the side of the
desk, much easier to access now. Cleaned up the cables behind there, I had
some really long ethernet cables back there and switched them out for
shorter ones. Still a mess but at least it's a bit neater.
Repaired the wreath, put that up as I realized, whoops, never did that.
Changed the monitors around, the one with the arm is now downstairs. Getting
the HP to work with the mini was odd. I think I have it working but it was
still strange. Oddly I am using the DVI->HDMI cable that didn't work with
the TV. I know! If it works in one place it should have worked in the other.
But it didn't. Anyway, it's working now that's all I care about. So I have
the better monitor upstairs, and the one on the arm downstairs. It's propped
up because it doesn't stay where you put it (probably the reason they threw
it away) but it works for me.
Moved the speakers too, they're up in the cubbies.
Messed with the iOS store. The square stuff (that I might potentially, you
know, buy?) not to be seen searching for it on the Mac. Stupid. Vay and
Lunar are though, so there's that. (They are made by different companies,
RIP Working Designs, we loved you!) The app for my library does show up, so
that's kinda neat, an easier way to get to that at last.
Still, quite happy with the purchase so far. Everything is very snappy, more
so than the old Mac Pro, if you can believe it. I know, I can't.
Did the leaves. It had snowed last night but it was mostly gone by about
3:00 so I went and did them. Supposed to snow more, goody.
I notice all my passwords saved in Safari are gone. It's not some sync thing
either, iCloud isn't syncing them. Can't export from the old version in the
same way as I can import into the new version either. Huh. I mean I have
them written it's just really, really odd. It's like my cookies are gone
too. Sites keep asking me stuff they shouldn't be. Gurr.
Did a drawing game with everyone (minus Kate) and went to bed.
Sun:
Cleaned out my keyboard, it was filthy. Pulled all the keys off and vacuumed
it. Nice an clean again. Adam last night was "oh, they're like $10 just buy
another one." Uh, first of all where are you getting a mechanical keyboard
for $10? I think I paid $80 for mine. I've never seen any for sale, even on
sale, for that little. Second, why would I contribue to e-waste for a half
hour (max) cleaning job? Doesn't make sense. But you see now why we're in
the state we're in?
Cleaned up the basement a little bit. Put the iMac I was using away on the
table.
Threw away some junk. Moved my lamp upstairs, that sort of thing. Made a
pile to bring in to work, a bit at a time, to put in the tech recycling bin.
I have much, much more out in the breezeway, I was hoping for another Xerox
event before winter but no such luck. Two printers from the guy down the
street, a scanner of his, and more. Oh well, they'll get out eventually.
Put the car inside, it was snowing much more than I wished. Don't want to
have to clean it off. Plus it'll keep the battery warm from out outlet not
battery power.
Finished up Season 2 of Nancy Drew.
Watched a movie.
Got ready for tomorrow.
Mon:
Remote start worked great this morning. Used it before I went out there, car
was nice and warm by the time I got in it. The snow didn't stick around too
much, but there's still some out there. More to come tomorrow by the looks.
Back to reality, went back to work.
Not that there was much work to be had, as there wasn't. Haven't yet gotten
an answer to the question "more testing?" when I asked about the new
onedrive app. So they get no more. There was no new build either.
Wrote the next chapter.
Went to see printer lady. She actually had a PCI card providing an actual
parallel port she used to plug in an old HP laser printer. And I mean old.
Like 20 years old. Crazy. It had somehow switched itself to LPT3 from LPT1
and she said she didn't notice that after looking for herself. So figure
that one out.
Came back here, sites, ate dinner, checked videos.
Tues:
Got some work in today. New version of the onedrive app, a version 0.0.8 up
from 0.0.6. We were promised a version 0.0.9 but I don't know if it came to
pass. A few things were fixed, but I passed on a few notes as well. That
didn't take too long.
Came back here, no second job today. Humm, time for paperwork again I guess,
it's the end of the next month. And the start of the last month.
Checked sites. Lost another $1,000+ in the markets today. Sigh. Watched
videos, ate dinner.
Then did some warframe, actually got the part I was hoping for, at the last
second as a bonus. Thanks, RNG!
Wed:
Had some actual work today. John came and said the printer was free, so I
set it up for the test no one has talked to me about. Thanks, Karen!
I did the first part, but had trouble with the second. Then I read the
attachments and discovered, oh, I don't think this SNMP value actually
exists on this model of printer. Trying it was pointless to begin with.
We'll see what she says. Did a little writing too, but didn't get through a
whole chapter. It's going to be a combat and I didn't know exactly how to
get them there.
Came back here, lost more in the markets, checked sites, ate dinner.
Got ready for tomorrow. Did a bit of warframe, not many missions just poking
around at stuff. Didn't get what I wanted.
Thought about the plot, don't know how I want the gang to get their
attention. Take over an apartment building? But I need to work illusion in
there too. Not sure how I want it to go.
Thurs:
Double the normal meetings today. So lucky for me.
Did a little more on the primelink, looking into the email thing from
yesterday.
Did some writing, I had figured out how I wanted it to go last night.
Then a meeting.
Then lunch.
Then three meetings right in a row. Neat.
Did the plants, and came home.
One call, something about hooking up an extender again. Going out there
Saturday afternoon.
Checked sites, ate dinner. Didn't lose in the markets today, that's a plus.
So let's look to the next few days. The usual for tomorrow, shopping and
seeing my parents. Will I have any work? Not sure, but probably not. Wait,
no, I have a test I need to run, trying to reproduce something, I got
assigned that at the meeting. So I will have something to do for a bit.
Then game, Sean said he did come up with plot so I'll do the first friday
game on the new system. Should work out well.
Most of the leaves are down, it may just be dry enough, though freezing, to
get them up on Saturday. I can do that in the morning, the appointment isn't
until the afternoon. Otherwise not much else on the plate at the moment. I
do have 5 invoices to put in for last month, may as well get that out of the
way. Oh, make a pie? Yes, why not? Have my parents over? Certainly. So there
you go, things to do.
So that takes us into December. Have you all been good little boys and
girls? Don't lie to me you know you haven't.
See you all next week.
