2021-11-11:
Fri:
Walked out today and found my little stand outside knocked over. Little
fairy was busted into pieces. Sigh.
Pretty boring at work, nothing new came in I needed to do.
I finished the notes, I think I have enough content to start writing the
next book.
Left early, went over to my parent's house. They were there! Talked with
them, tried to get my old email address back. Sigh. The error message was
not helpful, though of course that's to be expected, and seemed to indicate
the address was "already in use." The only thing we could figure is that
because we're trying to add it to a "different" account it won't let us for
security reasons. The reason I wanted it back was to be able to unfreeze my
credit. They gave me some numbers when I froze it with each agency but those
don't seem to mean anything now. But I can't get into the account because it
would have been done with the old email address. Though I wonder about just
"signing up" again with the new email address. I mean I'm still me, right?
Maybe that would work but at the same time... We'll have to see.
Did the shopping. Did not go to the bank. I set my checkbook down to clean
up the fairy and didn't pick it back up. So it was still sitting on the
table in my breezeway. Neat.
Came home, checked sites, waited until 7:30 for game.
We did good, more of the town is safe but not a lot more, if you get my
drift.
Then watched V for Vengeance because it was the 5th of November, after all.
Sat:
Checked sites, I got up late because of the movie so I just called at 11:00
a person that called me yesterday.
They wanted 3:00 anyway. So much for being free after 11:00.
Made more bread. I think I still have about half the zucchini left.
Cleaned up.
Watched the rest of season 1 Veronica Mars.
Started Season 1 Nancy Drew, which is the child of Veronica Mars and
Supernatural.
Went to the 3:00 lady. She has terrible luck with broadband. Her house was
wired, and I mean wired, by some kids who lived there before. Cat6 cable, a
nice switch, they did a great job. Sadly, plugging in only gave 50mb/s
instead of the 200 or more she should probably be getting. But at least it's
better than the 30 she was getting over wi-fi. Wiped out the account on her
crappy, older, win8 desktop and got the one I got her set up. So she can
home-office it up as she wishes now. Had the movie with my parents.
More Nancy Drew, no Xbox. Wonder what happened? He was talking yesterday
like he wanted to do some. Oh well, something must have come up. No big
deal.
Sun:
Checked sites until it got maximum sunny. It was really nice out! The leaves
are all still green. Odd. Usually I've done at least some raking by this
point. Not so this year. Will it snow before they come down? But it's so
nice out it doesn't seem like it'll ever snow either.
Put out the christmas lights. The 2 red and green strings I got at good will
did 1/2 the front and that's doubling them up. They were super long strings.
So the rest of the lights that normally went on the whole property got to be
doubled up too. Many lights this year! Yay!
More Nancy Drew, I only have 1 episode to go in season 1.
Moved my room around a little. Took care of some old magazines, ha 1990s
prices! Wait, they're about the same as prices today, oddly. Such power,
300mhz!
Got ready for tomorrow.
Two calls, the one guy again about getting a mac mini, yeah, just get one. I
don't care where. The other lady didn't answer. I'll call her back tomorrow
I guess after work. She's a little bit past it. So I'll just head to the
bank, then call her from there. If not there, no big deal. She has a laptop
that is "showing her an error" of some kind so it could be anything.
Mon:
Still nothing new at work, big surprise there. I did write a chapter and 3/4
of the new book. Introduced Veronica and almost got the point they're going
to see the new digs. Digs meaning office space.
The other thing I was doing was seeing how to buy a $3000 computer. Apple
actually takes paypal, so that wouldn't be a problem. But the more I thought
about it, the more I asked myself "do you need a $3000 computer?" And the
answer may be no. Thing is, I want to buy a computer just like this one,
that will last me for another 10 years. But why? Is it better to buy one
very high priced machine once or 3 lower priced machines over the same time
period? And what do I do that needs that kind of power anyway? Not much,
especially as I'll keep this workhorse machine and I have the PC too, if I'm
being honest with myself about the workload. I mean I already do Blender on
the PC because it won't run on this machine. The Mac Mini with a similar
amount of RAM and storage is about $1000, so I would have plenty "left" to
buy a dock, more storage, even a newer monitor if I thought I wanted it to
plug into it. I don't, I like my monitor. And that's the other thing. With
the laptop I would either have it to the side, meaning that nice display was
just a secondary display, or have my huge monitor to the side. That works at
work, but would I want to work here like that? Even on the 16"? That's half
my current monitor size. There are some negatives to changing this setup.
The mini is going to be fast enough, it's an 8 processor machine just like
my current one. And that's a design 13 years in the "future" compared to
this one. I have to assume they're fairly equivalent. So that's the
direction I'm leaning in now. Much cheaper machine, see if you need a better
one, and hey, maybe M1 Max will come to Mac Mini in two years and I'll just
sell that one and get the newer one. The current plan is to basically keep
everything on dropbox or this beast downstairs anyway, sort of a network
attached storage but as the old machine. Then I can swap back and forth
pretty easily, because I won't have to move any files. They'll all be on
another machine. Easy, right?
Went to the bank after work, then called the lady. She's not by work now,
but she's still in Webster. Wanted tomorrow anyway. Fine. Went home.
Checked sites, ate dinner. More Nancy Drew.
One call, should be no problem but I've said that before. Wanted Thursday.
Tues:
Nothing at work, as usual at this point. No news on the code we were supposed
to get. Maybe later?
Did more writing though, big surprise there. It's going well, I mean I've
basically written the thing in my head by making all the notes I did. I just
have to flesh it out.
Job was a BSOD, not just "an error message." Big difference. Took some stuff
off, really shouldn't have helped but it booted several times so... I left
it. Machine was pretty speedy for a thin notebook but I soon figured out
why. It had an NVM.e drive and just opening the browsers caused the fans to
spin up and then never go off again. Oh, really? It was pretty loud. Can't
imagine how bad the battery life on it must be.
Came back here, sites, dinner.
Ellen called, more pictures folder crap, just at 8:30 when we were supposed
to do warframe. Neat. Thanks, Ellen. Maybe find the notes I made about how
to move the pictures, as we've been over it 3 times now I think? Twice for
sure, I know that much.
Then warframe.
Wed:
Went to bring Oliver in for a urine sample, and they got one, that was 8:30.
So I was to work by 9:00. Not wanting to take another hour hit this week (as
the last two weeks) and having nothing this evening (but a small home
project I will tell you about in a moment) I figured I would stay an hour
later. I did.
That was the only exciting thing to happen. Don was in and out, doing some
scan thing. Don't know what he's doing, just scanning. Weird. Go away, leave
me alone!
Wrote more chapters. Up to chapter 6 and again I almost got through it.
Weren't we supposed to get 7.6 code this week or something? One demo is
delayed because they wanted our test cases. No. Make your own.
Came back here, moved my router and greenlight box to the side of the stand
they were on, much easier to access now. Didn't take too long, lucky I had
that board that was the exact length and width I needed! Nice.
Checked sites, videos, ate dinner. No calls, but I have a checkup tomorrow
to do.
Thurs:
Pizza time! Really, I found random pizza while watering the plants, and
opened the box. Most of the sheet was still there, so looking left and
looking right, I snagged a few pieces. The perfect crime. Having gone back
to warm them up and consume them I thought to myself self, there is
more than half a sheet pizza there. It's probably been there all day. It's
going to get tossed, isn't it? So I waited until it was time to go
home and went back to snag a few more pieces, put them in the fridge, and
have them tomorrow. This was less than an hour later. Most of it was gone!
What? How did that happen? Anyway, I cleaned the box out, so there.
Oh, right, work news. Uh, none. The plugin is in danger of missing our
deadline because they can't figure out (or are not trying hard enough to
figure out) why the card won't work. Just send us new plugins with more
debug code already! Otherwise, looks like nothing new this week. Lots of
stuff for next year though, don't worry.
Had the usual meetings, and did some writing. This chapter turned out extra
long. Nice.
Did a few general things for the lady for second work. She doesn't have a
smart phone (how?) and her iPad is stuck on 10.3.3 (I think it was) but the
google home app needed 13. Hilarious. It was on the iPad. I could open it. I
could find the device. But then it was all like, oh, you don't have the
latest, I'm not going to let you finish the setup until you get it. And
that was that. I can't update iOS so I can't update the app she already had.
Just finish the setup with what I've got! Stupid thing. I downloaded it to
my phone, so at least it's set up now, but they can't really do anything
with it. Great huh?
So dark when I'm getting home now. Sigh. Also it was like 7:00. No calls
though.
So watched videos, checked sites, got ready for tomorrow.
Let's see, the future. More writing tomorrow I expect. Don is out so he
won't be in and out scanning whatever he's scanning. I'll see my parents, do
the shopping, and head home. Doing game as far as I know.
Let's see, ordering medicine for oliver- Oh, I met another kitty named
Oliver today! The lady's cat was named oliver. And her dog was bunny? She
kept saying "I fed bunny" "and bunny was hungry" and I'm like "you're
missing a word there lady, you fed the bunny. But no, bunny was a
dog. Anyway. Getting his refill, from Canada, I have to scan the form. And
paperwork maybe. Christmas shopping? There's only like 5 weeks left? Usually
I'm done by now? Hello?
And that's it. Oh, right, no, I have the mac mini setup to do, forgot about
that. So I do have a job. 10:00. Right. No problem??? I hope. His current
one is pretty old, not sure how I'm going to do the transfer. Maybe I'll
bring a gigabit switch from my own desk and hook them up that way. Huh,
looking at a random search result you can just plug them together. I knew
that was an option back in the day, but it must still work? That would be
nice, getting the full gigabit speed should make it go fairly quickly. Okay,
feel better about that.
No leaves to do yet, though they are slowly starting to come down. That's
about it for this week. Two more to turkey day, just in case you forgot.
I'll see you all here when the calender says only one week. Bye.
