2021-09-23:
Fri:
Finished another chapter. Closing in on the end, one big combat with the
bosses left (once I figure out who they are and what magic they have, ha!)
and maybe a cleanup chapter or two.
No work stuff, sorta. I did put openSSL on the linux machine, but Christina
figured out how to use it on windows. Oh well.
Went shopping.
Saw my parents, got to meet the new bunny.
Got my recall letter for the Bolt.
Tested the dual drive adapter on my laptop, it saw both drives just fine.
I'll probably use that method tomorrow for the slow pc drive copying.
Put stuff away.
Checked sites.
Then did game. Wasn't quite as involved as the last adventure, it was a much
simpler ask. We beat it up though, in maybe the opposite way from what we
planned.
I was supposed to guard while the others closed the portal, but they got
stuck at the top and I closed it. Huh.
Sat:
Well, that was a crappy day.
Cleaned up for my parents coming over, good thing I did.
Left for my 10:00. That went okay, he was getting some bizarre message when
I tried to go into safe mode (a black screen in normal mode) and I ended up
fixing it by running chkdsk. Weird.
Also he was losing the internet on and off, which worried me, but I had to
get to my next appointment (at 1:00) so I just left. For all I know it's
been going on for months and he never noticed.
Got to my 1:00. I knew it would be painful, of course, transfers always are.
As I had, the night before, checked my drive thing I decided to use it. I
didn't think her laptop had USB 3. I later found it did, the tiny icon I
didn't see looking for it the first time. Anyway, my clone software didn't
want to scale what was there appropriately, the partitions I mean. So I just
tried copying the first one, and the main one with all the data. Four hours
later I realized this was a mistake. (It averaged 10mb/sec transfer.
Sometimes dipping below 1mb/sec. What happened to USB 3 being 5gb/sec???) It
would only boot to the hardware diagnosis. Neat. So I packed it up and drove
home, (adding 2 hours to my total driving time for this job! YAy!) Got there
just as my parents pulled in. I'll do it the standard way, probably leave it
overnight (if it will ever get to that point)
Watched a movie. Ate my last piece of bread as I hadn't had lunch or dinner
up to that point.
Then turned off bitlocker (how did it get turned on???) on the laptop,
installed the usual cloning software (why is the antivirus saying it's
malware? I've used it dozens of times, it's fine) and upgraded the video
card, while waiting. Oh my goodness this machine is crap, it's so slow to do
anything! Why is this so bad? It's only 3 years old!!!! (This is why I was
trying to do it externally, because I knew how slow it was)
Had some soup for dinner.
Sun:
46 minutes to do the transfer on the PC. It took 8 hour or so to "decrypt"
the drive whatever that means, as there was no password on the device so
what encryption should take place?
Did some speed tests. There's no difference copying from the device to the
external, and copying from the external to the second slot on the external.
So it should have done the 95GB from the lady's laptop in roughly an hour.
Why did it take four? Just that stupid encryption business? Got to be, I
guess.
Played a game most of the rest of the day. It's a long one.
Got ready for tomorrow, back to it I guess. Ugh, Autumn starts next week.
Oliver had first attack in two weeks.
Talked to someone for an hour, just to get the printer working and set up on
another device.
Then someone not getting the speed they thought they should. Downloaded the
speedtest app. Then it was fine. Ordered them a 1TB SSD. That took a half
hour. So it was 9:00 by the time I finished my calls. Sheesh.
Taking the laptop back over tomorrow, yay an hour of driving.
Mon:
Which happened.
Anyway, worked on some test cases today. Ted got them started and sent them
to me. I added some like localization and some other negative test cases.
Sweet.
That was about all the work stuff, though I did attend a quick meeting with
Christina and Gina about loading weblets onto the device. Oh, and answered
some questions about the AT&T feature from 5 years ago. Ugh.
Set up the combat at work, started "running" it. I didn't describe anything,
just wrote down the dice rolls. I'll fill it in when the combat is done.
Brought the laptop back, so that's done. Saw the horses again, yay!
Checked sites, ate dinner. Watched videos. Set up vet appointments for two
of my little men.
Talked to a lady for an hour trying to get her wi-fi extender working. It
apparently has no model number or other distinguishing marks? Really? When I
found a picture of one based on something in the manual and asked "Is this
what it looks like?" I got a "yup" answer. Neat. Only that was a lie. I
later learned it was not that. I also later learned hitting the reset button
did not change the lights. So, it's busted I guess. Could have more easily
and quickly driven there, made this determination, and come back here
instead of talking on the phone. I love my life.
Got ready for tomorrow, sent in my christmas list (it's never too early!)
Tues:
Not much happened at work today. We didn't even have the usual voice
meeting, everyone was just too busy. Not me! But I was alone. How sad for
me.
I did, however, translate the notes I had into the last chapter of the book.
Yes, all done but another proofread or two. Just in time to truly begin the
adventure with this character in Sean's game this week.
Started the re-read.
Yeah, otherwise not an exciting day. I did, however, after work hit up Good
Will because I realized I completely flaked out last month and didn't even
go. Sheesh. Got some goodies this time. Both for myself and the game. Like
some freezer pop things. I figure, hey, why not pour my ice cream mixture
(which is usually just a liquid) into these and freeze them? Way easier than
trying to dig it out of the container when it's frozen solid. We'll see how
they work. And a cool stuffed dragon. So big! Now where to put him...
Came back here, checked sites. Figured out the web game I was playing had a
native Mac client, so I messed with that. Ripped all the pictures out of it.
Heh, for no reason that I can recall.
The part came in for wi-fi guy so I called him. No other calls. Going there
tomorrow.
Played a bit more of the game while waiting to see if we would play Warframe
tonight.
Wed:
One work thing, just checking that a bug had been fixed finally. It was a
translation thing, one line had not been translated. As well as the cancel
button. It now was. Yay.
Otherwise finished the read over of "The Monster Diaries - Part 2 - Diary of
a Troll that Happens to be a Porn Actress - Part 1" and posted it. To the
dropbox I mean. Now to finish part 1.
Otherwise not much else exciting to talk about.
Went over to install the wireless card, it went fine. It seemed to be a
different card, but the machine picked it right up and got him online so
hopefully that does the trick for him.
Came back here, checked sites, ate dinner.
Thurs:
Went over to see everybody at my parent's house. The new bunny is so soft!
Everyone was fine, though Dusty was a bit nippy until I said "up up" and
then he realized what I wanted I guess. He can't actually get to the top of
his cage by himself anymore. They need to cut the pipe or something right
there. Would that even work?
Most exciting thing that happened today was the fire drill. At least they
waited until the rain stopped, it was pouring out in the morning. Otherwise
not much. We got a new D2.9 build with one new feature, but my offer of
helping Christina was rebuffed because it's so quick to test.
We did have our meeting, a demo of the upcoming "ask if you want to do
something" test. That should come next week so I'll have a bit to do then.
Wrote the next chapter of the Herman story. I need about three more
chapters, which I have in mind before his big bad boss battle, so that
should work out. Then I don't know what I'm going to work on.
After the fire drill we had the other meeting, and I checked the plants.
They seem to do okay with a few exceptions so I probably don't need to do
it. But I like walking around, seeing all the empty space we have yet to
fill. Yeah, what's that all about?
Came back here, did the usual checking sites and having dinner.
Got ready for tomorrow, made some calls. I got the 1TB SSD in so he's going
to drop his system off so I can do it here. Yay! No sitting around for 4
hours this time.
Carlos can't turn his Mac on, and he's living in assisted living now so it
would be difficult to take it to Apple to see about repairs. He's getting a
new one instead. Me going to get it, taking it to apple, leaving it (most
likely) going back there, I just don't know about that. I mean I might have
done it...
And one Saturday morning, she can't turn her PC on. Huh, is something going
around? Anyway, she said the power LED just flashes, so hopefully it's just
the power supply.
Looking to the future, probably not much work tomorrow, but I have plenty of
places to after that. Get cat food. Get toilet inserts. Go grocery shopping.
And I'm going to get something for Saturday at Sean's, maybe bread? Stuff
for ice cream. Oh, of course feeding everybody in the morning. No game, Sean
called it off. Doing two adventures in one week is pretty harsh, I agree.
Then the saturday stuff, game over there, one more trip to feed everyone on
Sunday and then I'm not sure. This time next week it'll be October, and we
start slip sliding into 2022. Can you see it, looming over the horizon?
Gonna be an interesting year, just as this one was.
Well, see you all back here next time.
