2021-03-04:
Fri:
Got a new version of D4.0 today so there was that to test. Should be the
final version, except for the fact that SSO can't scan or print. How is this
not a blocker bug? Christina said she could scan sometimes? I put it on two
machines, and neither one of my machines could scan or print. She said she
could print okay, but not scan. Weird. Oh, and it hung up once so clearly
it's ready for prime time!
Went over one machine for the uploading of the card list, that looks fine at
least. We'll do the other machine Monday.
That took all day. Had some confusion about where to get the SSO app, had to
use the trial, which was huh? Apparently there's some magic bits that can be
flipped for the account but for now I only needed it for a day so I suppose
the 30 day trial is good enough. Odd that the app is already on the official
site without the official release it's been targeted for not being done.
With all the problems I had with it, it's a little embarrassing.
Got gas, went shopping, saw my parents.
Home to put stuff away, checked sites, got ready for game.
Did game. Another adventure where we didn't get to the fight. Odd.
But it does mean roles were played so that's good. Went until midnight. They
used the dream world which I wasn't expecting, he was trying to find
Hitler's dreams, which wouldn't have worked, but I did want to show them you
can search for things you don't exactly know (like you can in Wheel of Time)
so I figured that was a good enough place for that intro as Neil skipped it
with his "the egg can't move" check from last time.
Sat:
Up and about. Looked for VHS. Found my VHS. Let's hope it all still works,
as my father wants a video trasfered.
Sites, videos.
Left to put in keyboard. Easy peasy. No screws, it just popped right out and
the new one went in its place. Lost money on that one. Back again.
Lunch.
Out to see about lady's complaint. It was just her trackpad button stuck
down. Luckily there's a cute little icon that represents it in the lower
corner so I showed her how to look for it and see what the buttons were
doing.
She hadn't even thought to borrow her husband's mouse, which was in the same
room, and try it.
It's not about computers, people, it's about logic and reasoning a chain of
causality that if one thing doesn't work and it depends upon another thing,
how do you test it? You test it like I did. Okay, I see the trackpad doesn't
respond to touch click eithers so what could that mean? Let's see if it's
windows being a doofus as usual by plugging in a mouse. See, nothing to do
with computers, just step by step breaking the problem down.
Put in her keyboard as well. Just a keyboard day I guess. She's the lady her
keyboard would mess up and print a bunch of characters while typing.
Back home.
Bit of warframe on easy missions to try and level up weapons. I really want
to get rid of this shotgun thing, it's terrible!
While I did that I let the VHS player go and record the video into my
computer. It's horrible quality, like a copy of a copy of an old reel to
reel film. I guess at least it won't degrade further? But it's almost
unwatchable. At least my equipment did still work, so that's something. Put
that away again when it was done.
Dinner.
Did a bit of reading, one of the sponsors for a movie was audible, and the
guy mentioned a book he was enjoying, and I looked and I actually had the
book! How weird is that. Yes, it was part of the fantasy collection I
"legally acquired." Why is that in quotes? Don't ask stupid questions.
Then warframe with Sean and Mizzy, as game was canceled, he had grading to
do. But only until 7:30 so we could have done game? But maybe he didn't have
the full adventure planned because he was busy. I can understand that.
Sun:
Videos, sites.
Did my paperwork for last month, all of 5 jobs, nice! Did the tax form.
Did some work on the story, had an idea so I needed to change the last
chapter a bit. Add something, really. So I added that up.
Warframe, ugh need to get rid of this gun and I am so close to doing so.
Reading.
Ready for tomorrow.
Made my calls, only one for Tuesday though I had four. Stupid dentist guy,
just go away already. He was supposed to look in his email for the receipt
for what he bought, then get back to me. But he calls me all acussing me of
ignoring him? What? So I take two minutes to look through his thousands of
unread emails (because of course he can't check a box and throw away the
zillions of spam he gets) and found it. Now he's all upset because the
recipt doesn't show a breakdown of what the warranty cost him? Dude, you
paid that much once, let it get stolen by your housekeeper, won't press
charges, now you're worried about it? If it was such a financial burden to
you (did I mention he owned his own dental practice? Which he must
have sold for millons of dollars? I mean come on, don't whine to me about
being retired, I'm sure you raked in the money when you were practicing, but
I digress.) I can't tell you what I don't know, dude. It doesn't say. Call
them and ask them when you order the replacement. I can't do everything for
you. Oh, and we was complaining I didn't show him how to turn it on. Uh,
really dude? And how it was "completely different" from the other one. No.
No it's not. Laptops have always had the same design, a power button
somewhere. Usually the top, sometimes the side. You've used computers for
what, twenty years? I'm not going to sit there and say "now this
this the power... button. You're not an idiot... Or are you?
More warframe but with friends! Using my sniper rifle again, thank goodness.
Started building a plasma sword, a pair of daggers, and some weird pharamone
producer for the story mission.
Mon:
Ah, welcome to March everyone. Sunshine and rainbows for everyone. Forever.
I demand it.
Started with finishing up the card upload test for the opposite machine as
last week. Loaded it up, did the test, everything looks good.
Took it off the list, we're back down to 9 now.
Then worked on notes for the game this week. Ninja!
Came back home, just made it in time to avoid the huge snowflakes that came
down. Got windy too. It stopped, then got started again. No thank you.
Ate dinner, sites.
A couple of calls today. Booked Wed and Thurs, the later one is coming here
to have his wife's new laptop setup. He's always come here for some reason.
6:30, which I guess is fine. Someone still needs to call me back though.
Hopefully can still do the Monday game with the others.
We did! Got off the phone at 8:30, we determined it was just scams, and that
was that.
Didn't start game until 9:00 but that was okay.
Tues:
Nothing new at work, with the new version tested now we wait until the end
of the month (basically) for the newer, new stuff to come in.
Worked on the game notes, tweaking my ninja, and wrote a chapter. Darkbolt
is defeated! Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Went out to look at the systems for "it's that time again." He only had
three to check this time, not two. Neat. All intel core 2 duo class
machines, yay. Still got through it in about an hour. One won't load
Malwarebytes so it uses spybot. 49 minutes later it was only half done. Mbam
can do the scan even on a machine that old in a few minutes. Great job
fellows.
Came back here, checked sites, ate dinner, fending off cats as I did so. Why
do they want my ranch dressing? So weird.
Worked on graphics for the game Friday, got ready for tomorrow, and did some
warframe. No calls, yay!
Wed:
One request by Joe at the end of the day. He wanted to know if some
"touchless" solution would be useable by the government. At first I thought
he was talking about testing every single solution in the pdf he sent me.
No, he just wanted the one app looked at. It's a joke. You scan a QR code on
the printer and get 1/100 of the features on your phone. Neat. Email didn't
even work, no reason why, and copy and print offered only 3 of the usual ~30
options normally available on our printers. Someone did a terrible job with
that app, who is testing that crap?
Otherwise, not much to talk about. Lab is still cold, Christina moved into
the little room off the main room to try and get away from it. She's been
bundled up in a hoodie for like two weeks now and her work order was closed
because 64 degrees is "the xerox standard." Uh, wat? Dudes, just pump less
cooling into the room, the printers will heat the place up and
everyone will be happy. They're not heating the place, it's cold air coming
out of the vents. We just want less of it. It's more energy efficient,
everybody wins.
Went out to look at the Mac. Turns out Mail was crashing for some reason.
Weird. Removed the mail app data folder and it was fine, so I figure it must
have been a corrupt file? Why not just crash, rather than doing some basic
error checking? Got me. Then I tried to update it. This was a mistake.
Couldn't find the upgrader at first, then managed to get it from Apple. It
started, rebooted, and then the whole machine crashed 2 seconds into the
boot process. Great. Got into the recovery partition, nothing to do but try
a reinstall, which it wouldn't allow, thanks, or run disk first aid. That
actually worked. I left before anything else bad happened. Their dog wanted
to come with me. Kitty was terrified.
Got back here, sites, dinner. Still no calls, so warframe, maybe?
Thurs:
Meeting day! And not much else. Marked the one test as done, as we are
clearly not getting a smartcard to work on the xerox system. Oh well.
Customer said it worked fine, nothing like making your customer test your
code for you.
Otherwise unremarkable. Proofread the latest book as we're near the end, and
I wanted to know what had sparked the whole "duplicates and time travel
plan" because I couldn't remember. That's because it didn't exist. Whoops. I
added it in. Wrote more of the final? chapter. Watered the plants.
Went to see about the windows live mail problem. They had two problems,
incorrect settings according to Spectrum and the old "message could not be
displayed" nonsense. I remembered to print out the cheat sheet I have saved
on the PC from when I last battled this foe so I put the registry changes to
good use. That fixed the problem by gosh and I was on my way home again.
Ate dinner, checked sites, then at 6:30 new laptop guy came. He left again
at 8:30. She had 11GB of stuff to transfer, and I finally got annoyed enough
with the slow rate I stopped it. Seriously, 11GB taking over an hour? I
think his USB port is busted or something, even if it's USB 2.0 it shouldn't
be that slow. The target machine went zip zip and it was done. Wish the HD
was accessible I did consider taking the thing apart but it looked like all
the screws so no love there. Anyway it's finally done. Got the final
google folder by zipping it and copying it that way. Figuring windows did
far faster one file than ~8,000 in there so it was faster to zip the file,
transfer it to flash, copy it off flash, and unzip it, than put up with
windows abysmal copy speed. I think it saved me some time. Oliver was
missing until he left, odd.
No calls today so hopefully a quiet weekend. No game by the looks, Stan says
he probably has to work as some "patching" is not going well. Sorry Stan, I
feel your pain in a way. But in others I laugh, and laugh, and laugh until
it hurts.
So the future looks a bit like this, work tomorrow if you can call it that,
we'll see what comes up.
Getting gas, shopping, seeing my parents. Then game finishing up the hitler
adventure and then doing the ninja adventure.
Nothing yet for the weekend so hopefully finishing book 10? I'd like to see
that happen. Nothing much else planned.
So that's this week. Hope it treated everyone well and you get your stimulus
check soon. But not $15 minimum wage, we can't have that!
Byeeeeeee.
