2012-02-08:

But first, just spent like 20 minutes having a conversation with someone about how youtube is so slow, again. The first 18.5 minutes was me trying to get them to type "speedtest.rochester.rr.com" into their address bar. They came up with some wacky stuff. So I sent them a link in an email, and they still couldn't get it. I had to reach across the internet, take control of their machine, and type into their address bar. I'm pretty sure I had this conversation with them weeks ago why youtube was slow, I guess it didn't sink in?

And you've lived the last 60 years without some major mishap… how? You can't type 26 letters on your keyboard into the right place? How do you balance your checkbook?

Anyway, finished the showdown so Dean has his parents back, and wrote up the epilog to set up the next book. The title was changed to "Due Process", though I'm still not sure of it. Book two will be "the unveiled world" as that's more in keeping with the theme. Ended up being 81,537 words, not a bad little effort. Turned it into an ebook so I can start proof reading it on the go. After I finish Sean's story, of course. You can find the link on the homepage, read it, comment on it, who am I kidding, of course you won't.

Couple of jobs today, the Radisson, (again) an hour to figure out why Opera, their java based hotel management software, was crashing IE8 when that's what they wanted put on the machine. Turns out they're using some ancient "oracle jinitiator" crap that crashes the browser. Goody. Tried putting the last version on there, (as it's totally unneeded now with modern java and thus, Oracle has stopped work on it) but going to the site again insisted on loading the older version. Wow. Just Wow. Finally turned security off for IE (yeah, that's safe) and it ran. Checked another machine later, they had turned security off (specifically Data Execution Prevention) for the entire machine in the boot.ini file. Is there a bigger word for Wow then wow? Also their network used to be separated into a "secure" network for credit card processing and the "regular" one. Not so much anymore, the secure one seems to have gone bye-bye. Also at home I get a ping time to Google (average) at 29ms. There it ranged from 55 to 300ms! Why would each machine be so different? Crazy place.

So I got to rebath a bit later then I wanted (after 5:00) but he was still there. He was complaining about it being "slow" but it seemed pretty fast to me. Wait, your crappy split in two hard drive is formatted FAT32? Oh, okay, is this still the 90s? I did my scans and left it running a defrag, maybe that'll help?

So I'm going back there tomorrow, before my other scheduled appointment. It's actually right on the way, so no big deal.

Got a system dropped off, it had some bad RAM, it was acting really weird, and finally crashed. Did a RAM test and boom- redness. Good thing it was one of the 256 chips not the 2 2gb chips.  I'm leaving it running awhile, make sure it doesn't crash again, but I'm sure it's fine now.

Had a dusting of snow, but supposed to be nicer tomorrow, maybe the heat engine will fire up.
