2011-08-09:
Last night I came up with a great idea to fix the whole magic debate, and Sean seems to approve so that's good. Of course he doesn't realize making this change, rather then weakening me as he had hoped, he will make me only more powerful!
See, he didn't like me walking around maintaining a couple of spells all day. So we've basically changed magic to be semi-intelegent and the incantation is actually asking the magic to "please bend reality in my favor for this specific effect" after which it goes away. So you can't walk around with it because that's not a "specific effect." So I looked into the Imbuing skill, which I had actually taken but didn't actually understand it as written. I was going to ask about it but must of just forgotten or something. Anyway, I revisited that skill and Sean was kind enough to rewrite it for me so it was a bit clearer what was happening: basically you can put a magic spell into an item, permanently. It's tough of course, and costs a lot of XP, but once paid, you don't have to maintain the spell anymore, it's just "on". Well, going into combat before I was always at a -2 to everything at least, because my familiar could maintain a spell and I maintained a spell. (Each one with a -2 cumulative penalty) Now I don't have to maintain two any more, only one, which my cat can do. So he's done nothing but remove my -2 penalty, making me that much more effective.
So after all that discussion about it not "being fair" I get to walk around with spells on all day, I still get to walk around with the one I really wanted on anyway, and I'm more powerful to boot. Sure, I had to
retcon my skills a bit, taking points away from skills I had spent it on to make sure I had the EXP to actually make the item (which is what I was working towards in the new reality where magic works the way it does now) but I didn't go crazy. Betcha didn't see that one coming, did you? Oh, and I can make items like that for everyone! So… yeah. Mizzy "pays" 29 EXP and I make her a sword that gets a +8 bonus to hit. Koro pays 25 or so and gets a crossbow he never has to reload. And I can make potions too, which is cool!
Guess which skill Sean nerfs next? Only joking, I kid the Sean, I do!
Anyway, went over to my first job, it was more then just they couldn't format the drive, which they didn't even need to do. Their machine was hanging. It seemed to happen more often when USB devices were accessed, just poking around my flash drive made it hang three times! So I cleaned it out the normal way and turned off USB, and gave them an eSATA connector for the new HD and a temporary USB PCI card to see if that's really the issue. We'll know soon.
Took me a bit longer then I had thought, but I glided right over to my next one and got there right on time. Just a new laptop to set up, nothing major. Then back here.
Worked out how much XP/Time it would take to make my Ring of Acceleration. Watched some more Robotech. Rained pretty good today, got a new drip in my ceiling, thanks oh so very much.
One job for tomorrow, just a clean out by the sounds of it. 3:30.
