Well if you're so smart, what am I going to do next?

Oh, you are smart after all.

 

First up is Scribus. I sent the file to Sean and said "how about this layout" to which he said, "I'm actually making all the books look different this time." Which is fine. Easy to change. So I did. I think it looks pretty good. But then he asked "oh, does it make that clickable TOC and index?" to which I said, "let me check." And it seemed easy to do- draw a box around it, make it a link, done. But I couldn't get it to actually work. Preview sort of makes a grey box around it, but doesn't take me anywhere.

So now the question is, should I just go forward and people who use preview are out of luck?

Amazing that a piece of software can come so close, and that one thing you really would like to have, nope sorry.

I know it works, Sean's documents do the click thing just fine. It's very frustrating.

Oh, the professional software: $700. Thanks Adobe. You know, Final Cut used to be like a thousand dollars, now you can get Final Cut X for $300. That's the full version, not an upgrade price. So a video editor, that I could sit down and make the real Star Wars Episode 1 with sets me back $300 but if I want to sit down and make a flyer to pass out it'll be $700. Anyone see something wrong there?

 

Anyway, jobs. The first one went fine, just manually got rid of a fake antivirus and that was that.

Then to the guy that makes wooden horses down the street, just a slight preference problem on the one iMac, but the old eMac was a little more puzzling. Every time it was booted it would say "none of your preferred networks are available" despite showing the preferred network in the list. Huh? So I turned off the asking message and just showed him how to connect to it.

 

Called the lady with the headsets and went over there. That one was "fun" let me tell you. It seems both headsets were actually broken, it had nothing to do with the PC at all. The one headset microphone would only work some of the time, otherwise just give a static. Of course when I tested it here it worked, and I only tried it the once, so I thought it would be fine there, too. The other one would record great, but the headphones part sounded awful. After three different sound cards, and messing about, I finally figured all this out, it wasn't easy. *shakes head* See, I thought maybe the speaker out was busted, but I would go back and forth, and the other one just gave static, etc, etc.  

 

So I'm all pissed at that, and making no money because nothing was actually wrong, I just didn't put it together quickly enough, and I come home and eat dinner. I get back to work on the PDF thing, and start looking at a laptop that's been dropped off. I get a call- oh crap, I had another appointment today at 6:00. Current time: 6:45. I hate making appointments that late, gee wonder why. So I drive 20ish minutes out there, and as I suspected, it's the power supply fan that's seized up totally. So I just change it and come back here. About 8:00.

 

Calls, book tomorrow with like five, the printing place a zillion miles away on thursday morning, and one that afternoon at 3:30.

 

The laptop I have no clue, it runs in safe mode, but even with all startup items off, it just sort of dies about ten seconds after windows boots. Doesn't hang as such, but it doesn't actually get anywhere either.  I looked, she doesn't really have anything on it, I may just wipe it out and start over. Stupid Vista. 

 

So that was my day. It's now 10:00, can't work on the PDF until I hear back from Sean about what's best to do, I guess I could write more Carlita Tale, I did that last night, got a bunch written I didn't even think I would write. I thought they would just walk there and I would describe the school, but they started talking about Alchemists and other powers after Lucia remarked how run down the road was. *laughs* They've taken on a life of their own. I was just writing along, "yeah, they would talk about that on the way." and didn't even get to the school yet.
