2011-05-23:
How could it get better? Easily, I suppose.
Pretty normal start to the day, shopping in the morning, of course. Still no library, I've started the last book in the box-o-books Heather let me read, then I have five more I bought that are sequels to one of those, then a whole box full of Manga to get through, before I start back on library books.
Then off to Rebath, of course he can't explain properly what's going on, I think his internet connection is cutting out, but I later find out it's actually his machine hanging when the screen saver comes on that's the real problem. When I went to the screen saver settings, Avast popped up its new little "this may be unsafe, would you like to open it in the sandbox" feature which I think was messing it up. My guess is, the screen saver would come on, but then Avast would try to pop up, but the screen saver would be covering it, so neither one could move or do anything. So I just turned it off.
Stupid PCs.
Then gave a loner PC to the lady who I got the busted motherboard for. Still no response to my email, guess tomorrow I involve paypal.
Then at 3:30 to see a crappy PC (but I repeat myself) that probably has a failing hard drive. In the 45 minutes I was there it made the "I'm going to die now" clicking noise and hung the machine up. So I said "I think your hard drive is failing." But I managed to clean it out or whatever, for what it's worth.
Then over to see Sue, put her front panel USB ports back in, as the screw that held them in place popped out. And here's where the big complaint is: She wants to attach a picture to an email, but every time she tries, the machine "soft" hangs and she has to unpower it. By "soft" I mean the mouse moves, and you can pretend to switch between programs with the task switcher, but nothing actually happens. Can't even bring up the task manager, thanks XP. When I did it with the task manager running, I couldn't click on anything to kill firefox. Great! I reproduce the problem. I try to narrow it down. Turns out maybe one of the pictures is corrupt or something, because the view was on "preview" or whatever XP calls it, so just opening the folder in the file dialog box caused the machine to hang. This is the OS you people cling to? Really? I had to move the pictures out of that folder, then back in a few at a time until I found the right group that had the "bad" picture in it. Wow.
In between all of that I wrote some more of Carlita's Story, checked my websites, (what, no darkbolt this week? Slacker!) and wondered how long it would be until my neighbors cut their grass. They did do the front today, badly. Oh well, makes no difference to me.
Not many calls today, not many at all. Two appointments tomorrow, a clean out and setting up the website for Boris. Probably return that broken motherboard too, even though they haven't mailed me back, their page says a "7 day return policy" which is convenient if they pretend I don't exist for 8 days. Maybe some scraping over at grandma's, we'll see.
