2011-04-25:
where water literally falls from the sky.
I once read that in a book, before the child in the story sent the alien back home with jugs of water, making him wealthy. In another path in that same book, an alien teaches the child to make gasoline out of regular household chemicals and water. Even at the young age I was when I read that story, I imagined how devastating that would be to our planet, should that knowledge be passed on to others. It's only now I realize the alien going home with water was pulling the kid's leg, a species that perfects faster then light travel would have no problem creating something as simple as dihydrogen oxide. It was the alien seeming to do a good deed that was paving the way for invasion, once we were desperate for water ourselves, taking our planet would be quite easy in the chaos that followed.
I guess the moral there is, look for the knife hidden in the gift. Or that rain is neither unwelcome or unwanted, in moderation. After all, where would be without it?
And where would I be without silly people who can't do their own computer stuff? Probably a plumber. Anyway, left a little late because I was finishing up Rhapsody, not quite as close to the end as I thought, but it cried out to be completed. There are several more books in the series, and I scored them all at once for less then $30 on ebay. Thanks ebay, for making everything worthless. Except Macs, have you seen what old Macs, like I'm talking if it was a PC it would be worthless, old Macs go for on ebay? I can't get a Mac cube for less then $800. You could by two brand new PCs for that price, heck three if you really scrimped. A Mac everyone laughed at and said was priced too high, but ten years later, it's held onto almost half it's value. Find me a PC that's ten years old someone will give you $800, gladly, for. Go ahead, I dare you.
So, shopping. Then out to Holtzbergs to investigate "a noise" and put in a USB 2 card for him. That machine is older then I thought, it's only 1Ghz. iPads are faster then that. Heck, my MacBook Mini is faster! He has this huge wooden desk he had the sever and his machine behind, unmovable as it takes up half the freaking room. I finally realized someone had drilled a whole in it while looking underneath, so I moved his machine in front of the desk, thank goodness. No more squeezing back behind there for me.
Oh, and it was just a fan needing some oil. And he got his USB 2 so there.
With all the problems trying to just get at his machine, I was a bit late to the 12:30, but I made up for it by being done in record time, it wasn't bad, just the antivirus was about two years out of date and it needed some care. I spoke gently to it and got it to swallow the medicine, then I broke into song "Oh a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down" and they threw me out.*
The last/next two were setting up new machines and transferring data. Oh, and I hate PCs. Plug a PC drive into a Mac and copy something off it. Anything. No problem, right? But plug a PC drive into a PC and oh it's "you don't have permission" and "You must take ownership" and "what do you want to do with this file?". And windows just lets it happen, so really, what's all this "permission" garbage if you're just going to let me blow past it anyway by jumping through some hoops? Oh right, just to make it more difficult for me, thanks.
Then home, dinner, made a couple of calls, booked a couple for tomorrow.
Craig called me that the laptop was making the noise again. I knew that. See, while cleaning up over the weekend, I went to recycle the box his replacement keyboard had shipped in and it was heavy. Like, too heavy. Like, it still had a keyboard in it, heavy. Whoops. Guess I went and sold him his old one back. So now I get to go back out there and give him the right one. Silly of me. Telling myself "we all make mistakes" doesn't seem to help. Neither does trying to pin the blame on a certain cat that lives around here for not reminding me. Responsibly, that's what adulthood is all about, right?
Forget that.
So out there, then dropping off the replacement backup drive for York, then a 12:00 on Landing, a Mac user I've worked for before who ran some weird cleaner and now he lost all his music? Great job! Just because it's on the App Store doesn't mean you should just go running stuff you know nothing about, buddy.
Then nothing until my 5:30 here.
Watched some more Dexter, second disk was better then the first.
Had a dream last night about trying to use Alchemist powers to manipulate my environment. I won't tell you where I was in the dream, but it wasn't going well. Somewhere there's another me with Alchemist powers and he really sucks at using them. Practice more, boy! I should go back to practicing the piano. Of course then I wouldn't have time to complain here, so I guess some scarifies must be made. Now if I had Alchemist powers... different story.
Adulthood. You could have warned me!
oh that's right you did
Question of the week: mother's day????
