2010-11-18:
The day of the great returning marks the 8th Anniversary of my taking of leave from Xerox. How odd.
So, another busy couple of days to be sure. First a throughly boring hour watching some old guy struggle to type his name and things into a web form to get a second AOL email address, and then sign up for Amazon in case he wanted to buy something. But I saved him from renewing Norton, so it's a fair trade.
Next another user with GB worth of mail. Where is all this mail coming from people? Oh, 5 years worth of sent mail? Hummm....
Then a machine that didn't need a cleanout very badly, but I did it because that's my job.
Lastly a crazy Dell technician that obviously didn't know what he was doing. My task was to transfer from his old HD the stuff to the new HD the crazy guy put in. So I do so. "Please note," I said in that maddeningly superior way I have of talking to those that have been duped by their own foolishness, "that as I am able to copy all the data off this hard drive, there is absolutely zero wrong with it." We then put it back inside the machine to use for a backup, and what do you know, it booted up just fine. Glad I spent the last two hours hardening your machine and getting your stuff onto it, for no reason at all. Oh well.
Finished another Diana Wynne Jones book, The Pinhoe Egg and I'm quite pleased as before. It's amusingly similar to real life events. To wit:
Half mad grandmother must be physically removed from her home kicking and screaming. (figuratively)
People wonder how much longer half mad grandmother has to live
Half mad grandmother makes trouble for everyone playing tricks on rival family with her magic, causing them to retaliate against the entire village
Main character little girl finds out half mad grandmother is doing these things, but is not believed because of spells cast on everyone to make them believe she's not responsible
Grandmother's house is cleaned out and cleaned up, and it's discovered that underneath all the ancient dust and junk in the house is a very nice house indeed
Seem just a little bit familiar? Maybe?
Three for tomorrow, got the video card in with the HDMI and the switchbox, so it's off there before seeing the black and blue one. Also back to York and to a laptop "with a virus". Then to the grand returning! At 6:00! Woohoo! He gets on the plane in two and a half hours? He'll be in the air the equivalent of 17 hours? 1:00AM to 12:00PM = 11 hours. 12:00 pm to 6PM = 6 hours. 11+6=17.
That's gotta be rough.
