2010-10-20:

Say one thing for Woot! they may only sell one reasonably priced object a day, but they will ship that reasonably priced object up to five days later.

So, yeah, got my 4TB hard drive today. Just thinking about having 4,000,000,000 bytes at my command blows my mind. My first computer I bought half of was a color classic, with a 40MB hard drive. That's .04 GB or a .00004 TB drive. Actually, that would have been a hilarious salesman pitch: "And storage? You're covered with .00004 terabytes! Spacious!"  Of course I knocked it down to 2TB so I could use the other 2TB drive as a backup. Because any digital file you don't have two copies of is something you don't care about. Say it with me again children.

Any digital file you don't have two copies of is something you don't care about.

I've seen too many dead HDs and heard too many "you mean I've lost everything?"s to remind you to check your blood sugar, and check it ofte- I mean, back up your stuff, and back it up often.

I have a buyer lined up for the 2 1TB drives this will replace I'm going to see tomorrow, so I spent most of today watching voyager- I mean watching the information flow from one drive to the other. Right now it's copying the Star Trek episodes Sean gave me, so that the Iomega drive can become the new time machine drive. Because any digital file you don't have two copies of is something you don't care about.

But really, I had no work for today (boo) so I got that system I was given several days ago up and running. Put all three systems on craigslist. Made Heather's system more attractive with the 19" monitor I bought, so now it's a complete system for only $450. Any takers?

Work has been a bit slow otherwise, sadly. Yesterday I did three, went over, again, how to use Picasa because computers generate EM interference that blocks the formation of long term memory engrams. Brought a machine back I had taken home monday to scrub. Had to put the HD on another system to do the scan. Odd one, it found only one thing, a file in the system32/drivers folder with a 2009 date. Usually virus files still have recent dates, meaning I can find them a bit easier. Not so in this case. But that did seem to do the trick, though I had to rebuild the "windows installer" and take MSE off for Avast. MSE just wouldn't run, or install a new copy to repair itself. Seesh. And one dead power supply at a "retirement home" for the front desk. That machine was ancient. It was running XP somehow, though I don't know why someone bothered, it was just running office, and the sticker originally was Win98.

Monday I set up a new system for a guy way, way out there on route 96, to set up a used car dealership or something. He wanted to tap into the DSL connection waaaay over there and ran the cable himself. He totally destroyed it, at least that's my guess why it didn't work, by stapling it to the wall and celling. He put dents in the thing like crazy. Anyway, apart from that it was pretty standard. I ran a new cable and he was going to get different fasteners. Though he did want parental control put in (because why hire people you can trust?) which necessitated downloading ALL of Windows Live, which in typical PC fashion took forever. Didn't help the PC was crap, I mean, they even still make single processor machines that aren't netbooks? Crazy. Also did the shopping, oh yeah, funny story.

I want to make something out of clay, because the papercraft thingy I printed has no numbers or directions, I started cutting it out but I have no idea how it goes together. So I thought it's a "simple" enough form, maybe I can just clay it. Or whatever the verb is. So I go into JoAnns, and look at their selection of clay type materials. I sift though 1 lbs for a certain price vs 2 lbs for this price and I'm thinking, is clay REALLY that hard to come by that it's sold in tiny little sticks like this? Then I saw, way in the corner, bottom shelf, all alone, a ten pound box for the same price as the 1 pound sticks I was looking at. "That's more like it" I though. I'll let you know how it comes out, when the time is right that is. "That's some heavy clay" the girl at the checkout said. "No heaver then ten pounds of anything else" I thought to myself. Still not sure if that would have been appropriate to say, because I have, oh, no social skills?

Oh, and more news on the Mormon front, now in addition to Mormon radio and Mormon TV commercials, I've now seen a Mormon billboard. Desperate much? This actually pleases me. It speaks to a time when we finally put religion behind us and focus on science.

What does not please me is the dozens of "elect so and so" billboards up now. And the electronic one cycles through just candidates too. Is anyone really paying that much attention to really know one judge is better then another?

Been playing a lot of multiplayer halo, and watching the films both of my own mistakes and high scoring games played by others. It was amusing, I played a game against a guy with a memorable name and he seemed to go after me a bunch of times. Well, I was paired with him again for the next game and I made it my special mission to go after him that time. So we both got 16 kills that game. Well, we were then on opposite sides for a third game (because of 200,000+ people online, you see the same people over and over?) and we both sucked out on that board, only 6 kills. It's odd how the stage can influence how well someone does. There's one of the remade Halo 2 stages, a sort of office building, hate that stage. I got two kills my last game there. Two. Pathetic. But I keep analyzing my mistakes, or at least trying. That's why I haven't been writing, that and nothing much to report, I guess.

Funny grandma story! When I went in last friday she wasn't in her room. I saw the bathroom light was on under the door so I thought she was in there. I didn't want to startle her and have her fall so I just sat and waited. Well, ten minutes went by and I thought, maybe something is going on here, she takes laxatives, right? So I took a stroll down to the hall and looked in at the cafeteria and there she was. She said she had been given a shower on friday morning, then went back to sleep and thought it was saturday, so she was sitting down there to make sure she didn't miss dinner. Riiiigh. You missed four meals grandma. Sure. And did you forget I come on fridays and you hadn't seen me yet? Apparently so.

Squeaker is back to sleeping in his plushy cube and being a lap cat. Funny how the change of weather makes that happen. Hardly any calls today either, just going to see hard drive guy tomorrow.

Game on Saturday was average, no big fights, but things progressed. I think.
