2010-05-24:
So last night there was this guy with his "frozen" machine, and after I wrote the entry I called him back because there was a nagging in my brain and perhaps this was not what it appeared. Also if his machine was hung up I wanted to make sure he knew enough to turn it off so it didn't burn up all night. So upon calling him back and asking for specifics, I learned it was the mouse that was not responding. The Wireless mouse. The "when was the last time you changed the battery" "Oh, I don't know" Wireless mouse. Can you guess what the problem was? Seems pretty plain to me. But then, those mysteries of science that allow devices to be powered are tricky in the extreme, only the most learned wizard would think to replace a battery rather then pick up a phone as a sort of troubleshooting step.
So that knocked him out for today.
Leaving me more time to pursue the library and select groceries, which I did.
I then came back home, checked my websites, and made a few changes to the character generator. I put one in and fixed a few bugs.
Then back out again. Some people, you know? Here's a guy that's reloaded his machine OVER TWELVE TIMES. He had windows.old.000, windows.old.001 all the way up to windows.old.012.
Insanity: doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting a different result.
All for want of a modem driver. Yes, the poor, sad, fool was not only reloading his machine endlessly, he was using MSN internet service, which I'm surprised still exists. But they do have to support those three other people around the country I guess, so... I had to go outside, over to his neighbor's lawn, to get a wireless signal on my MiniMac Black to get his modem driver. One might say to "steal" some wireless signal, but that's a gray area, or grey at the very least. *shakes head* Dial up. Honestly. He looked like he could cut back on the fast food (or the booze, he admitted to having "a few drinks" before I arrived) and have enough to afford broadband, if you know what I mean.
Then back home to await a Mac laptop coming over. A Mac laptop with a very pathetic 256MB of RAM. I installed more, ran 400Mbs worth of updates over my tubes, erased a user, and sent her on her way.
Ate dinner. Couple of calls, but I only reached enough to book tomorrow morning. They must all be outside barbecuing or something. Further note: it's actually getting warm in my house finally! I don't have to wear my little flannel over shirt thing that I love so very much to keep me warm. Bliss!
Did a couple more characters, found another bug, but overall I'm quite pleased. I'll see about fixing those bugs and move on to the browser, which I hope won't be too bad.
